Jazz Art: Miles Davis

Several months ago, I had a small art opening for my Jazz series of paintings which included (Miles, Duke Ellington, Mingus, Cassandra Wilson, Charlie Parker, and Wes Montgomery). Several local artists left me comments on ways to improve. As a novice, I welcome all tips and criticisms.

I've been spending the last several weeks cleaning up these Jazz pieces and working on new Blues pieces. I am finally finished with Miles and am ready to let him go. What I liked about this piece is the use of complementary colors. I believe it is what makes this painting appealing. What I didn't like was the use of the color straight out of the tube - a newbie faux pas.

This piece is going to a friend of mine to celebrate his new professional and musical ventures.

  • Aymiee, it's very cool. I like the way it pops out. Your friend is very lucky! I'm amazed you have the time to work on painting with everythng else you do. I love Miles, too. He's my ring tone.

Oh check me out this morning. There are some music books there I know you can use.

  • Nathan - Awwwe.. thanks.. hahaah.. I will try to do that for you.

But - Painting is my biggest passion -- I have to find time for it. I will redo this painting again on a larger canvas.

Liked your read on google. :)

  • What does "color straight out of the tube" mean? I think your drawing is fantastic -- you are so talented.

  • Becky, hahah..Thanks. I wished I had as much talent as Bud with music! And your talent for words. In another life, possibly...

I use water mixable oil. They come in tubes. A lot of newbies (including myself) make the mistake of simply applying the color straight out of the tube. This color is dull and not as rich. One should mix the color with other colors. Example, black straight of the tube is dull. But black made up of reds, blues, burnt umbers... that is a vibrant, colorful exciting black!

  • I finally realized what your art reminded me of, or at least your style. Have you seen 50 First Dates? At the end, Drew's character supposedly painted Adam Sandler's face, and when I was watching it this morning, I realized THAT'S what Aymiee's work reminded me of...finally. Don't you hate it when it takes forever to make the connection?

  • I love 50 First Dates. The concept of that movie moved me a lot. Yes, I do remember the art in that movie! That is kind of you to compare my art to the works of the artist in that movie.
