World Music

A very talented upright bass player suggested that I listen to a Romanian gypsy band named Taraf de Haidouks - translate: "band of honourable brigands". I listened to some tracks at Amazon.com and he's right. Taraf de Haidouks are great!! There are so much depth and color to their music. Their sound is of "bebop, salsa, and the polyrhythms of Zimbabwe and Nigeria". They are currently touring in California right now (Santa Cruz, Davis and Berkeley in May).

While reading up on the band, I came across a world music web blog. They have articles on Brazilian Music, African Music, Cuban Music, Ethno Beat Music, Roots Music, Reggae Music and much more. I had seen "Yeshe" perform Zimbabwean music at Divine Appointments and found I really like world music. It's amazing the different forms of music that exists. I feel like a child in a candy shop. I want a taste of all of them!

Concerts I am looking forward to attending:

  • Taraf de Haidouks in Davis in May
  • Avila Blues Festival (May 29th)- Robert Cray Band, Fabulous Thunderbirds
  • Django-fest in SF in June (thanks to fellow blogger) If you are a Django fan, this is the blog to read.
  • Acoustic Alchemy in San Juan Capistrano in July

Always, if anyone is interested in going, let me know. Unfortunately, my dial up service wasn't fasssst enough to submit a request for U2 tickets.

Music is a strong inspiration for my paintings. I've finished a Jazz and Blues series of paintings. Now, I am inspired by folk/bluegrass and world music. I think tonight I am going to work on a new piece.

  • Aymiee, I'm back and I'm reading but I'll never catch up. I'm gonna try to get my friend Helen to put music to Sing Through the Pain.

  • Yeah, we would have loads of fun. My close friends here aren't really into my taste of music. So, I've been going alone. No problem.. I get to meet interesting people there!

  • I logged on to Amazon and checked out Taraf de Haidouks. I'm thinking it would sound good if I was stoned out of my mind but while sober it made my brain vibrate.

  • hahaha... I guess to each his own. I really enjoyed it because I like the sounds of the accordian and violin. It's very different from mainstream music. I believe its beautiful music. "Indiaca" conjurs up images of people playing in the rain... "Turceasca" makes me want to bust out belly dancing moves!
