"Say hello to my little friend.........."

"Lucky Day" is the name Tianna chosed for her new Mini Rex "Velveteen Rabbit". The little buck is about two weeks old. We bought him today at the Farm and Ag show in Paso.

I've never owned a pet in my life, unless you count gold fishes and beta fishes. I had some when I lived in the dorms.

I was bitten by a collie (or so I believed) when I was younger and have been fearful of dogs growing up. As I got older, I eventually got over my fear. However, my little girl is very afraid of animals. I realized it was time for her to have a pet to help her get over her fear of animals. Unfornunately, I am very allergic to cats. Does anyone know if you're allergic to cats, if you will automatically be allergic to rabbits (dander and saliva) too?

Lucky Day is soo cute and with velvety fur - so soft to the touch. From readings,
"the Mini Rex is the direct result of the crossing of a Black Dwarf Rex buck (imported from Holland in 1984 by Marylouise Cowan of Maine) with an undersized Lynx Rex doe."

Any pointers on how to potty train rabbits is highly appreciated... :)

on a side note, I also bought some herbs (sage, basil, parsley, cilantro, mint), pepper italian roaster and tomato sungold. I'm going to attempt another little herb garden. My first one (back in the winter) failed miserably. My patio doesn't get a lot of sunlight and my plants died within days.

My indoor plants are also withering away.. and I am not sure what I am doing wrong? You can see the leaves turning brown...too much water? not enough light? A neighbor said it was too humid? If anyone is a plant enthusiasts, let me know how I should properly care for my plants.

  • I love that name.. the bunny's not just "lucky," she's "lucky day."

Maybe I'm too attuned to these things.. but yeah, kudos to Tianna. :]

  • hahah.. kids are funny. She said "Lucky is his first name". So I said, "Okay, what's his last name". Tianna replied "Day. Lucky Day, cuz its his lucky day we bring him home with us".

  • It's my understanding you don't potty train bunnies, that's why I got fish.

  • I like small pets but I don't think I'll ever get one because I would not be able to take good care of it. My mom loves to garden . . . she didn't pass her green thumb on to me though.

  • Brady - actually, I've been told you can potty train a rabbit like a cat.. only I've never owned a cat..

Artha - yeah, I am afraid that might happen .. but I figured what the hell, I raised a little girl, how difficult would it be to raise a rabbit?

  • I think that's wonderful of you to get your daughter a pet. It teaches responsibility and ends up being very rewarding for them to take care of something and have 'ownership'.
I too am allergic to cats. I was tested by an allergist 10 years ago and I also reacted to dogs, feathers and mold. I've had problems with rodents too, but never bunnies and because of the feather allergy, I can't even have a down comforter or pillow. I make due by avoiding them as much as I can and taking precautions such as simple hand washing. It's amazing how much that helps.

  • hi my name is meli, recently i bought two little bunnies one being a rex also and the other a dutch. potty training is possible and actually not hard at all. find a corner lucky day likes to use mor eoftent hen others. rabbits use the potty in the corners. then take a few marbles and place them in a little box filled with shredded paper (not color just black and white newspaper) or hay. Then about every ten minutes place the bunnie back in the litter bos, if the bunnie uses the little box by itself praise it by petting and givig it a small treat. VEggies are BAD for rabbit, in very small amount some carrots tops and beat tps are ok. the best thing is to keep the bunnie on a timothy hay and pellet diet with puffed veggies treats and dried fruits. if your bunnies uses the potty outside of the box which it will simply tell the bunnie no in a stern but not evil command an then put it back into its box pet it and give it a treat. to intsise it into the box put its favorite toy or little treats in there. make sure you play with it plenty and teach your daugter to sit while she holds it. dropping the bunny can be fatal. also make sure that you google basic rabbit care. you will learn there are many important aspects that need to be taken into consideration whe rasing a bunny. my email is melissaemiler@yahoo.com ui have many tips i would be happy to share with you. please e mail me sometime.
