Plane Crash - Paso Robles
Two men in a single-engine airplane headed to San Jose were forced to make a crash landing in a Central Coast vineyard on Tuesday. That vineyard is only minutes from my house. The plane was a Beech 35-C33A Single Engine plane.

I heard abou this on the way to work this morning...Without knowing the specifics of the accident, it does point out a couple of things.
While they did make an off-airport landing that resulted in significant damage to the airplane, I understand no one was killed, so the landing in response to their emergency was succesfull.
And it's really great to live and fly in an area with open space, had that landing taken place in a crowded metropolitan area, it's a good bet that the outcome wouldn't have been that good.
There is an interesting statistic that says that fewer than 10% of general aviation accidents are caused by mechanical failure. That measn the other 90% are pilot induced.
Anyway, I'd rather be in a Beechcraft or Cessna than a Boeing when things go bad!

Aymiee -
I just read the KSBY story. He set it down at Arciero. I wonder if he considered PRB ? rwy 31 is no more than a mile or two from the vineyard.
Not second guessing, but it's a shame he couldn't or didn't make the airport.
If there's a lesson in this for you it's always be looking for an out when you're flying. "If the motor quits NOW, what am I gonna do"

You're right Chris. I saw the wreckage on my way home today. It's still there... I am really going to practice more emergency procedures. The Hunter Golf Course was just yards away... all green. I wonder if he was shooting for that?? But, they walked away alive.. and so the Pilot did a good job!
