No, never admit defeat. Adjust your goals to a more reasonable level. You may need to make shorter term goals, mid range goals and then long term goals. Read them every day. It's better than praying because you're not wishing for something, you're programming yourelf to do something. Also write down what you've done each day to achieve your goals. Reread this periodically and you'll get a better sense of what progress you've made. That's what I live by.

In answer to your question, I think it depends on what the dream is. Sometimes your priorities change and I don't think there's anything wrong with giving up on something that hasn't been attainable, if you no longer want it.
If it's something you still want, but know for sure that you can NEVER have or is impossible to achieve, then yeah, I'd probably move on. But, I wouldn't if there was an inkling of a chance.
